Herrlicher Jeans world
Sustainable Denim
Jeans made from sustainable denim
Herrlicher is consciously pursuing green paths: we are creating a jeans collection that is more sustainable than ever before.
Awareness of sustainability is nothing new at Herrlicher. Labels without plastic or metal, fair trade, and short transport routes underscore the environmentally conscious mindset that has always been lived and cultivated in our company.
As a denim supplier, however, we are aware that there is no alternative to converting jeans production to an environmentally friendly process. “We are consciously converting our denim production,” says owner Erwin O. Licher. He had been thinking about this idea for a long time, and two years ago he put it into practice. For this decisive step toward sustainability, Herrlicher is working with not just one, but several strong fabric manufacturers: the denim weavers Candiani, Isko, Realteks, Tejidos Royo, and Evlox specialize in the production of environmentally friendly denim.
Both the production method of the blue dyes and the use of ecological and recycled materials play a major role in the manufacture of sustainable fabrics. This saves a lot of energy, water, and chemicals. Herrlicher benefits from these technologies and modern processes and uses them for its own jeans products—which in turn benefits you in the form of high-quality, sustainable jeans.

Organic Denim by Candiani
When it comes to sustainable denim production, Herrlicher works with a weaving mill that is considered an absolute pioneer: the traditional family-owned company Candiani in northern Italy is known for producing innovative denim fabrics from organic cotton. The patented Kitotex® Veg technology used in the manufacturing process saves at least 30% energy, 50% water, and 70% chemicals. The dyeing process is particularly special: where conventional methods use chemical dyes, Candiani uses chitosan from shrimp shells, which is completely biodegradable.
The goal pursued by Candiani is clear: future-oriented denim production. At Herrlicher, we share this vision and want to continuously develop our products. That's why we will continue to expand our range of jeans made from sustainable denim – stay tuned! If you are interested in sustainable denim, look for the “Organic Denim” seal when shopping; OD100 is the quality number.
We use denim fabrics produced by the Candiani weaving mill for our classic jeans. This means that you can now purchase the Herrlicher jeans you already love with a sustainable upgrade! What's more, these jeans boast a naturally soft feel, rich blue tones, and exceptional comfort. Candiani denim is made up of the following special components:
Organic cotton
Candiani Denim doesn't use just any cotton. Instead, it uses organic cotton that meets the globally recognized GOTS standard. The organically produced natural fiber is obtained and processed under strict conditions.
Kitotex® technology
This patented dyeing technology is quite something: it enables a resource-saving process that saves at least 30% energy, 50% water, and 70% chemicals. Kitotex® is a natural polymer called chitosan, which is obtained by recycling shrimp shells or from special fungi and seaweed and is completely biodegradable, i.e., renewable elements from nature.
Recycled elastane
Elastane is needed to obtain denim with maximum stretch. Candiani uses the first certified recycled stretch fiber for this purpose. This so-called “ReLast fiber” was developed exclusively by the Roica company and made available to the weaving mill for further processing. For consumers of jeans products, this means high elasticity and a comfortable feel on the skin.
Reused Denim by Isko
Recycled Denim by Realteks
It has long been recognized that throwing things away is immoral. The Turkish textile company Realteks is committed to recycling waste and has developed a particularly innovative manufacturing process. Realteks' “pre-consumer recycled cotton” is produced as follows: cotton waste and scraps generated during the spinning process are collected directly. These are recycled and flow directly into the new fibers for the blue fabrics. The certified company is also part of the “Better Cotton Initiative,” which aims to improve environmental and working conditions in cotton cultivation.
At Herrlicher, you can recognize jeans made from Realteks denim by the quality number “RD105,” which stands for the special recycled denim. High comfort stretch is guaranteed, and the look also scores across the board: this “vintage denim” has a particularly soft feel and, at the same time, an uneven surface that creates a striking look.
Organic Denim by Tejidos Royo
Could this be the future of denim dyeing? In any case, the motto of Spanish denim manufacturer Tejidos Royo is: “The future of sustainable denim is now.” The company describes itself as a pioneer in the field of sustainability and has developed a unique technology that is set to revolutionize the dyeing of denim fabrics. The so-called “Dry Indigo® technology” makes it possible to dye denim fabric completely without using water. In addition to 100% water, this saves 89% chemicals and 65% energy.
Our Herrlicher women's and men's jeans made from Royo Denim with the “OD200” quality mark are not only characterized by their particularly environmentally friendly dyeing process, but also by their distinctive wash. The current jeans models come in the color “less water,” a rich dark blue without any wash effects. The 98% cotton content of the denim ensures that these organic jeans have a pleasantly firm feel and are unbeatably comfortable.
Organic Denim by Evlox
Founded in the Basque Country in 1846, the traditional company Evlox is considered a pioneer in innovative jeans manufacturing. Europe's oldest denim weaving mill boasts over a century of expertise. The organic cotton used by Evlox for Herrlicher jeans is certified according to the OCS standard and is grown using environmentally friendly methods that reduce water and energy consumption as much as possible. The use of toxic and persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilizers is completely avoided. In addition, organic farming regulations prohibit the use of genetically modified seeds.
Herrlicher jeans from Evlox bear the labels “OT150” for organic twill and “OD300” for organic ecru denim. Both fabric qualities are based on undyed ecru denim. While “OD300” remains natural and presents itself in its pure form, jeans made from Organic Twill ‘OT150’ are given a subtle color. To achieve this, the fabric is colored using a special process. This “garment dye” process results in a stonewashed look similar to that of blue jeans. Thanks to high-performance technology, our Evlox Denim pants are highly elastic and extremely comfortable to wear, which you can really feel.
